My students come from a large urban school in Pompano Beach Florida. Over 70% are on free or reduced lunch and we are considered a Title 1 school. There are many that barely make it and live at or below the poverty level. The majority come from minority groups and many speak English as a second language. I am new to this school, the first grade and the classroom and I am trying to create a friendly, warm and inviting environment that captures them and brings them into the world of learning as opposed to the world of video games. I want to develop their ability to make good choices and help them to eventually become competitive members of society. I truly believe in the research about student achievement when allowed to make choices and I believe with your help this can be achieved in my classroom with these kiddies this year!
