At the high school where I teach in the Bronx, resources are rare and technology is virtually non-existent. Though the faculty is filled with some of the most caring and dedicated people I have ever met, our love for our students can only help them so much without the tools to give them the education they deserve. These are kids who have been shot down their whole lives and who live through hardships that kids should not have to live, and it is heartbreaking to see them losing faith each day. At my school, like many others, you have to be more than a teacher: you have to be a resource, a mentor, an advocate, a friendly face, and a motivator. More than anything in the world, I want my students to be able to feel accomplished, which is difficult in subjects as concept-driven as Algebra and Geometry. Either it clicks or it doesn't. Many students see math as abstract and confusing, and I try each day to spice it up, but with just markers and a board there is only so much I can do.
