My students live in what many deem " a concrete jungle." They have very few opportunities to play. Our school doesn't have grassy areas nor does it have enough supplies for them to play with. My student's live in neighborhoods where gangs run rampant and safety lies in the comfort of their homes. It is in that same comfort zone that they sit on the couch and play video games. The concept of being outside is foreign to many of them. The only outside time they get is either at the park or at school. At school however, it is 20 minutes a day aside from the daily recess and lunch play. That is not enough time for children to be children. They should have more time and physical education toys to make their play meaningful and interactive--nothing a little comet ball, parachute or ring toss won't fix.
