My students are typically from impoverished neighborhoods, but they really latch on to learning. Anything that can engage them works incredibly and almost all of them have expressed interest in having a class pet. If I worked in an affluent district, getting a pet would be no problem, I'd pitch in a bit and raise the rest of the funds with my classes. Here, though, not many can afford to pay for their child to have a class pet, much less a pet of their own. I can't tell you how many times they've asked me to buy a snake, hamster, or lizard. They're so interested in wildlife, it's insane!
