Our high school art students are awesome. Most of them are from economically disadvantaged homes; we are an urban school and nearly a third are learning English as their second language. But the fighting spirit that brought their families to our neighborhood is strong in them. When it comes to learning about art, they are courageous, and so interested in developing skills that they are willing to try news things and to persist. This fearlessness is inspiring to me and I'm sure they will go far! We are proud that so many of our students go on to college, even though they are the first ones in their families to do so. I like to think that our art classroom contributes to their ability to size up any challenge, even ones they haven't faced before, and to attack them with patience and skill.
