Our school is located in an inner-city neighborhood in Oakland primarily known for its crime rate and violence. However, their are amazing things happening in our neighborhood as well! The cultural life of my students and families is vibrant. They work hard and want to be successful, and want their children to have prosperous, happy futures. Over 90% of the students at our school receive free or reduced lunch. Many of their parents do not have documents. For most of them, English is not their primary language. Most of them have had nights where they couldn't sleep because of the sound of gunfire. Despite all this, if you came into our school, you would see joyful, artistic, talented, intelligent, and incredible students; and an extremely dedicated staff.
