Creating a 21st Century learning environment generates high morale for students and increases students’ collaborative learning opportunities and engagement. The physical structure of a classroom is a critical variable in affecting student morale and learning. This ideal marries Hope-Hill's mission and vision with the Atlanta Public Schools’ mission and vision of creating a high performing learning environment and district where educators inspire, families engage, and students LOVE to LEARN. A primary classroom is responsible for building a strong foundation on which all other learning experiences occur. Thus, it is essential that we ingrain in the students early the importance of succeeding in school. As educators, we set that journey on that right course when we are strategic and purposeful in creating a classroom environment that meets their developmental needs cognitively, socially, and emotionally. Students will be encouraged to learn academics and core content knowledge in fun and engaging ways. Allowing them to freely move, and participate frequently in flexible seating arrangements cements their excitement and desire to acquire more knowledge. This project is unique because we typically see 21st century classrooms set up in higher performing schools; with a higher socioeconomic status; and with teen-aged students. It is my belief that targeting a lower performing school that primarily educates students and families of color with lower socio-economic backgrounds, while also focuses on younger-aged students, is a step in the right direction of decreasing the “Prison to Pipeline” cycle. The 21st Century classroom relates to the mission of Atlanta Public Schools because we are striving to build a foundation that successfully transitions students to higher education with an emphasis on college and career readiness. Grow, Lead Transform, Indeed.
