My classroom is a 4/5 special education self-contained room in a federally mandated 'transformation' school. Our school is located in the Northeast in a densely populated urban area greatly impacted by the effects of poverty. My students range from children who cannot read to a couple on a grade 4 level. They are a very kind and warm group of children who struggle to learn what others do with ease. For some, reading has been more chore than joy and it is my intent to help them change perspectives this school year. Fortunately, I have many high interest books at various levels to grab their imaginations, but not a great place to sit and read. Putting down a rug and a couple of bean bag chairs would create just the spot for them to feel comfortable and discover the pleasure in exploring books. Of course, I will provide formal interventions which will help them to actually learn to read, but you can help provide them with a place to do so comfortably.
