We are a diverse mid-size California high school. My journalism students are juniors and seniors, but they may begin working with the newspaper as soon as they enter the school (they just can't be in the class until their junior year). We produce a 16-page newspaper 13 times per year with special issues for Homecoming and graduation. We are the heartbeat of the school; our students, staff, and parents turn to us to reflect not only important events on campus and in the district, but also within the state, nation, and world. My students are dedicated, hard-working, and passionate about what they are doing; journalism is not a required class. They are there because they care about their newspaper and their community.
