Have you ever been in an 8th grade class that is unsure about graduating high school but is highly interested in social justice? This is what my classroom is like. They are high-risk students who overall read at an elementary school level but have experienced things far beyond their years. They are the first 8th grade class at John Liechty Middle School, and they haven't yet realized how much the teachers and administrators care about them. It is a public school that has Small Learning Communities, a performing arts emphasis, block schedule and team teachers.
