I want my students to be readers for life, not just because they need to read for school. In 1990, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop published an essay about the importance of providing young readers with diverse books that reflect the “multicultural nature of the world” in which we live, labeling books as windows, mirrors, or sliding glass doors. Books can show us views of the world, can reflect who we are, or can show us worlds forged in imaginations. Independent reading expands vocabulary, boosts writing skills, and builds prior knowledge. Having a diverse classroom library and allowing students to choose books on their own is one step toward making them readers for life. I want to include independent reading in my classroom, and this donation will help me get closer to having books for any kind of reader-avid to reluctant. These additions to my classroom library are some of the most recent young adult novels. Please help me give my students access to new and exciting books!
