I have 25 eager Kindergartners in my class. All of my students qualify for free and reduced priced lunch. Most are experiencing school for the very first time, and are having their first experiences with learning and literacy in the classroom. When they enter our small school in Oakland, California, they become part of an inclusive school community. Since my students have had a variety of early learning experiences before entering school, they come to the classroom with different strengths, interests, and goals. My students have expressed interests that range from butterflies, to planets, to transformers. They have expressed these interests in shy voices, in booming confident voices, in Spanish, in English, and through drawings. They need materials that will give them access to learning materials and information that reflect their diverse interests, experiences, and learning needs.
