I teach (grades 1-5) elementary students in a predominately Hispanic urban district of Massachusetts, with so much emphasis on improving standardized test scores that there is little to no budget for the arts, including music. Two years ago my principal was able to hire me as the school's first music teacher in almost twenty years, and we have since done our very best with very little in the way of musical instruments and other classroom resources. The music program is thriving, with the addition of both a chorus and a (large) drumming ensemble this year! With that success, however, comes a need for more resources- especially percussion instruments- so that my students can continue to get the very best music education I can provide for them.
