I teach a diverse, energetic population of middle schoolers. My American history classes are not leveled, so in a block I might have gifted students, special education students, and English as a Second Language students learning together. They have a variety of reading levels, historical background knowledge, and learning styles. My classes tend to be very interactive and hands-on, which my students love--they frequently ask for more of those types of activities and I find that they are able to remember much more about the historical events that we simulate than if they were just reading about them in a textbook. Our middle school has the highest percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch in our county.
