My students are from a rural area in Virginia. Our school is a Title 1 school. The makeup of my classroom is varied; usually I have struggling readers, special needs students as well as students identified as gifted. My students come from varying backgrounds where their literacy experiences are not always equal. Parents are encouraged to read often to their children and many do, but some due to economic hardship do not have time for this due to working extra jobs. My classroom is a print rich environment and I convey my love to literature to my students. Each day my goal is to make my learning environment as engaging as possible. I want students to feel valued and motivated to share their thinking with others. Not to feel worried about making mistakes because it is through these mistakes that we learn.
