Did you wonder where you were spending the night when you got home from school? Or being the oldest sibling at age 10 and having to be responsible for feeding and caring for the younger ones? Many of the youth in our inner city schools face these challenges at home daily. Many do not go home to parents who check their agendas, help them with homework and read with them. We, in the school environment, provide stability and safety to these students. They lack organizational skills mostly due to lack of parental involvement and social/economic situations. They'll be heading into middle school next year. We have the task of preparing them for this leap into independence. Modeling for them ways to organize work and necessities is crucial for them to succeed in the fast paced world of middle school. During lessons my goal is to organize their thought processes. Couple that with managing their materials ensures they can locate what they need when they need it = success and achievement.
