Reading is one of the most important parts of our sixth-grade curriculum. This novel provides students the opportunity to experience three very different characters and learn to empathize with the characters as well as fellow classmates who have encountered similar experiences. Students will be asked to analyze the story and characters and attempt to put themselves in the situation of each character. Projects with this novel will also incorporate current events and social studies content as students study different cultures and conflicts. I believe that giving students authentic experiences in novels will help them not only in academics but in life as well to become more empathetic and compassionate human beings. Having a book to take home means that students will get the opportunity to share their learning with family members and encourage others to pick up a book and read.
