I teach fourth grade at a neighborhood school in an impoverished area in South Carolina. My students are a diverse group with various learning needs and challenges. 67% of our students are ELL (English Language Learners). We are a Title I school, which means that over 93% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Our parents and community are very supportive, but a very large portion of our students still cannot afford basic school supplies and struggle to make ends meet at home. Technology availability is limited at best. We have a very active and supportive principal, but the funding for technology is lacking. My students have a deep desire to learn. They are hardworking, caring, and motivated. They deserve to have the same opportunities as other students their age.
