The students that I teach live in a very low income, suburban district. Most come from blue collar families, and many have parents who are currently out of work. Unfortunately, in many homes in this district, education is not a priority. Students either have to get legitimate jobs at a young age, or they succumb to the illegal world of drugs and gangs that has pervaded this area for generations. So many of my students come to me feeling as though they are incapable of doing well in school, yet so many of them are incredibly bright. They can accomplish great things, but they either have not been given the tools to be successful, or they just don't understand why they need them. I have been teaching these students for the past 15 years, and I love them as if they are my own children. Our district is in an 11 million dollar deficit, and supplies are limited. I hope to be able to provide my students with the tools they need to be successful in life, as well as a love of learning.
