My learners are ten to eleven year old, fifth grade students. They are a very diverse group of learners all who come from different backgrounds. Each student comes to school daily with various "baggage" to sort through from their homes. These students attend a school that has an extremely high number of low socioeconomic students. We are Title One school and have acquired 100% free and reduced lunch status. My students also are very hesitant to read. A high majority of my learners have parents and or guardians who do not see reading as a priority in life. Therefore, with fifth grade being the last year of elementary school, I feel it is imperative that I make a positive impression upon my students that reading is important.
