My students are wonderful. They are bright and articulate. They are excited about learning and always eager to discover new things about the world they live in. My students come from very low income communities around the Brooklyn area. Many are in foster homes and homeless shelters. Many have a parent that is currently in jail and many are being raised by a grandparent. My students come from a community that is fractured. Crime is high and gang activity very prevalent. Gunfire is not unheard of in this community. Once I can recall the children racing in frightened from the school yard and gunfire erupting from the community outside their school yard. It was frightening. Many times they come in talking to us of the gunfire that had occurred the night prior. In spite of the harsh realities of this community, the students come in ready and willing to learn, excited to be with friends and teachers, and eager to show teachers just how impressive they can be.
