I teach students with cognitive disabilities. My kids can learn, but at a slower rate. I teach all areas of curriculum. I teach students self-advocacy, independence skills, social skills, time and money skills.. I work with 24 students daily in reading and literacy. One third of them are non-verbal. My staff and I are teaching the students to use a picture symbol board to tell us what they want, need, and ask and answer questions. We do this with music, stories, and books with added symbols. Their skills are between Pre-K and 3rd. They are the sweetest, kindest students. My kids are 6-8th grade. We have fun, and always look out for each other. My kids participate in a Special Olympics Team. We play flag football, floor hockey, and basketball with typical peers. Our team, Sanford HYPE! is ability based, rather than by age. Our kids can maintain these relationships up to to adulthood.
