Drama. If I had to sum up my ninth graders in one word, "drama" immediately comes to mind, for this is the generation where within 5 seconds everyone knows the business of everyone else thanks to texting, Twitter, and Facebook. Now while my students just love acting out the various make-ups, break-ups, and other episodes of their lives, my students equally love reading about drama and acting out things during Readers Theater in class. My students have most enjoyed learning and I have most enjoyed teaching them when we are not laboring through reading long passages in a novel, but when they are actively and enthusiastically performing as they read. Reading becomes not a chore they must endure but a pleasure they get to participate in either by acting it out or listening in the audience.
