Our school is an award winning Magnet school located on the edge of a large, metropolitan area. The students have been working collaboratively to create a walking program that will integrate physical exercise with mathematics. We have decided to count and track our steps and then use the data we collect in a variety of ways to meet the college and career ready standards of the common core. The students will be divided into teams and each team will work together to try and meet fitness goals. The first goal we are aiming for is 100 miles, then 500, then 1000! With help from the teacher, the students will enter their daily and weekly totals into a spread sheet. The data will be graphed using a variety of graph types; bar graphs, line graphs, pie graphs and plot graphs. The data will be used as a basis for researching areas the students could reach using their accumulated miles. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams.
