Unique Learning is the name of the academic curriculum we follow in the self-contained Autism programs. Currently Sunnyside pays for the yearly subscriptions/licences for each grade level/grade band. Unique Learning is a standards-based program specifically designed for students with special needs to access the general education curriculum. We use Unique for ELA, Math, and Science. This program has been used mainly at the elementary level and we are expanding its use in the upper grade levels. As part of the project there are many materials that have to be created for our students to have access at school and home. Some of these materials include printing the reading materials and activities. We laminate the materials so they can be reused and can easily be wiped down(sanitized). Our students learn best with hands-on tasks/activities. Some of these tasks are costly in putting together, but can be reused. We would like to provide every student with supplemental hands on materials for when they are at school and during remote learning. As the years have gone by our program has grown. Each year we get more students. The program currently has 52 students, which means as the years go by the programs at the high school and middle school levels will get bigger. We would like to plan ahead and have all the supports our students need available for them in all 3 programs (elementary, HS, middle school). For the upper grade levels(middle school and high school) I would like to provide opportunities for vocational training. Some of the things the students were interested in doing is making T-shirts and greeting cards. We would like to purchase a couple of Cricut machines and a heat press.
