In addition to fiction texts, nonfiction (or informational) texts will help students become subject matter experts on a variety of topics. The expertise gained from thorough study of the material will allow students to become teachers within our classroom. My students will read to acquire information for themselves as well as bring forth information to share with the classroom community as a whole. Essentially, each student will benefit from all the texts studied through either reading accomplished within a small group or through guided instruction from classmates who have mastered their nonfiction material.
When students are involved in actively reading interesting subject matter and responsible for peer instruction of that subject, purpose is established making learning relevant. For many students, knowing their reading holds relevance is key to creating agency. The wide variety of nonfiction texts selected will allow for each student to find a topic they can either relate to or have a desire to learn about. Each of the nonfiction texts selected provides material students will find relevant and applicable towards future studies and as citizens of the world.
