92.9% of the children in my school are low income, and 65% do not speak English as a first language. The live in a city with little, if any access to the natural world. Many parents are immigrants that struggle to get by, and do not have the time or money for enrichment activities. The students bring a wealth of experience about different cultures and survival in a challenging world. One of the remarkable things about this school population is that the different cultures blend harmoniously together. And although they may be economically disadvantaged, they recognize how well they have it compared with the rest of the world, and that they have opportunities that their parents did not. Despite the challenges, it is a story about optimism. I teach 5 classes a day with a total of 135 students, so many students participate in this project at some level.
