Math at the sixth grade level is very developmental as some students are still learning their basic facts while others are ready to explore the complexities of pre-algebra. A single class period will have a range of all of these learner levels, as well as many students who are simply convinced they are terrible at math. Since moving to the middle school this year, I have seen an increase in my class sizes to 40-45 students at times. Also, with shortened class periods of up to fifty minutes, math must be completed within a specific time range. While completing math by hand is important, there are times when a calculator is a necessity. With a calculator, a student can complete a lesson or work on a concept quickly and independently, feeling proud they were able to complete the work without help. The few calculators my students do have, are different types and students spend time being frustrated trying to work the tool instead of completing the assignment.
