My first grade students attend the largest elementary school in our town which also happens to be the highest poverty school. We are known for having the "west side" kids that come from low performing families. While these students are at a great disadvantage, they should not be labeled because of the families they were born into. As teachers, it is difficult to get their minds into academics when they are worried about home, food, safety, etc. Our school's mission statement is to "teach the whole child" and we recognize that they need us to meet their personal needs before they can focus on school work. While we are always making great strides with them, we are also finding that we have to educate the parents as well. I am a strong believer that it does take a village to raise a child. Therefore, I have "Happy Hour" where parents can come in for one hour a few times a semester and be taught how to help their child based on their individual needs. Dedicated families notice results!
