I would like to provide my autistic students a safe space by creating a calming room with an aquarium theme that is welcoming. My students will be ecstatic to have a pleasant environment when they need to take a break or to deescalate. The room will be designed to provide a range of stimuli and will be converted into two stations, a stress relief station and a calming station. The stress relief station will be composed of yoga balls, yoga mats, basketball hoop, stress balls, sensory blocks, hand fidget toys and puzzles. The calming station will be composed of a futon, bean bags, pillows, area rug, sensory sox and weighted blanket. I would also like to enhance the ceiling and walls by adding a calming autism sensory projector, a jelly fish lava lamp, wall decals and aroma therapy. Research has shown many benefits of a sensory room that can help those who have learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or sensory impairments learn to interact with the world around them, but in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and their ability.
