The students in my classroom are all on the Autism spectrum. They have limited communication skills, ranging from a few words to no words. These are children ages 3-5 who have so much to say and so many needs to be met. The children are very visual and are able to use pictures in place of words. Often, these pictures provide a "bridge" to speaking. The pictures help trigger words that the student may not be able to produce on their own. My students have difficulty understanding spoken language, but pictures often open up the world for them. Suddenly, they are able to understand what is expected of them. Pictures also help organize their day, often used as a visual planner. The children in my classroom are capable of thinking and producing great things, but all are limited by their lack of communication. Two of my students have special health needs, also. The use of pictures will give them an additional way to express their needs.
