Developing socio-emotional intelligence from a young age is an important part of my job as an elementary school psychiatric social worker. Helping students identify emotions and be able to cope with big feelings and life changes are invaluable skills in creating resilient adults. Storytelling is a wonderful way to introduce children to complex emotions and life circumstances like divorce, death, loss, and other challenging situations. Normalizing feelings and being able to talk about them through the characters in books will help my students increase their emotional vocabulary and communication. It will also open the door for them to articulate their particular challenges in a healthy way.
