Most of our students are first and second generation Americans coming from non-English speaking homes. Many of them have difficulty with reading comprehension, as evidenced from our test scores, but they do like to read as evidenced by the activity I see in our library everyday. Our school is a public high school. There are a lot of clubs for students to be involved in, but there isn't that one unifying aspect that brings cohesion to a school. Students don't have that sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves, which is important to develop in becoming a member of society and to want to contribute and shape their community.
