In Outdoor Leadership class, experiential learning (learning by doing, not only reading or theorizing) is the primary method for meaningful, real world education. As part of my curriculum, students learn about and then experience planting, maintaining and harvesting a school produce garden. With the addition of an outdoor classroom space to our garden, my students will be better able to utilize this learning opportunity and many others outside my classroom walls. The picnic tables, canopies, and mobile white board asked for here is the furniture needed to make this outdoor classroom a functional reality. With an outdoor classroom, my students will engage with projects such as observing our plant growth stages, and then seamlessly have space to record, analyze and create a presentation with visual aids on what they found a few feet away. They will have space at harvest time to pick their own vegetables, and using simple tools and ingredients, learn ways to prepare and enjoy the garden's output. The mission of my Outdoor Leadership class is to "...provide a space for scholars to practice positive habits of leadership, develop confidence in their own leadership abilities, and grow from new experiences. Outdoor Leadership will push scholars to consider their own beliefs about nature and the environment and provide positive experiences outside to increase their knowledge and appreciation for the natural world." This outdoor classroom project would directly and positively impact the ability for my students to accomplish this mission for all school years to come.
