The materials requested will help students learn best by allowing them to move as needed and give them the opportunity to choose the seating that interests them. Flexible seating allows students to wiggle, bounce, and rock as needed and promote more on task behaviors. Flexible seating in the classroom promotes student choice and ownership in learning. A study from Psychology Today revealed that “giving people some control over their surroundings adds to their sense of well-being.” Educators report that children take more ownership of the classroom (their classroom) when they can choose their seats, and are given freedom to move around when needed – for example, to see the board, to get away from a noisy neighbor, and perhaps sit near the window where there’s natural light. I envision students being able to use these forms of flexible seating during whole group and small group lessons at tables in the classrooms, during carpet time, and throughout the day. It is my hope that all students will utilize the form of flexible seating that works best for them by allowing them to choose on a rotating basis. In doing this students will discover preferences for their own learning and have a voice as opposed to being told what type of seating to use. I have dabbled a bit with flexible seating and am excited to add more choices to my classroom with your help! Thanks you for considering this opportunity and investing in the success of our future generation!
