I have the best job in the world. I teach in an inner city neighborhood in one of the poorer schools in California. I am greeted every morning by twenty eight little faces, many of them tired and sleepy because they went to bed late or had to get up extra early just to be able to get to school on time. Most of the faces I see are those of eager students ready to explore the wonders that I have in store for them that day. My students are all second language learners and they struggle daily to learn grade level curriculum. Many of them come from single parent homes and some of them have had to deal with very challenging obstacles at their very young age. Yet despite all of this, they come to school every day, rain or shine, on an empty stomach sometimes and wearing the same clothes as the day before many times. It is my job to provide them with all the learning tools I possibly can to make their year with me a valuable learning experience that will last the rest of their lives.
