My 20 first-graders demonstrate the changing face of New York. They come from Mexico, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, the Ukraine, and Puerto Rico. Some came to me without a single word of English, while others are highly proficient in English. As their teacher, I strive to build a sense of community and respect.
