Many of my students are long-term English learners with under-developed academic skills, especially in reading fluency and comprehension. Most of my students enjoy reading, even though they are struggling. They love to listen to stories, choral read with adults, and partner read with each other. Unfortunately, they are held back by the reading development processes of reading fluency and comprehension. Spanish is the primary language spoken in the majority of their homes. Some of my students lack role models for fluent English. Many of my students' parents work and are raised by their grandparents who only speak Spanish. Every one at this school qualifies for free lunch. I have 32 students in my class.
