The majority of my students are learning English as a second language and they would benefit greatly from listening to great literature. They live in a low income community and most have two working parents which lack the time and/or ability to read with them daily. So, what’s so special about these children? Well, they are learning that they can all be smart and successful if they work hard and never give up. They understand the importance of working hard to achieve a goal and that some of them will have to exert more effort in order to succeed. They are working each day with a sense of urgency to improve their reading fluency, writing, and language skills. Despite their best efforts, they still struggle to meet all of the English Language Arts standards because most of them were not exposed to early literacy skills at home.
