My students attend a special education school. They a are mixture of children that are on the autism spectrum or with other types of special needs. Most of the students have language and communication skills that are emerging. They have difficulty understanding language or communicating their wants and needs. A lot of them use augmentative communication devices, picture symbols, and sign language to communicate. Most of our students have difficulty with attending during group lessons, typically needing one to one instruction. Literacy and language arts enrich their lives by teaching them language, communication, and reading skills. They love listening to music and a great way to engage their attention during group instruction is by being animated and fun, adapting books to their level of understanding, teaching using subjects and activities that interest them (music!).
