These materials will help my students integrate art throughout our lessons. In my classroom, we learn through integrated units. Science and art are incorporated into the core subjects of English Language Arts and Math. Throughout each unit, the students are able to draw out their findings or discoveries and then present it in a short essay. For example, in our "Adaptation" unit, my students have studied about penguins in Antarctica. They have learned how their different body parts help them to adapt to their surroundings. For many of the students with different learning modalities, drawing or sketching out a penguin and labeling their specific body parts, helps them to understand how they adapt. This deepens their understanding and they are able to write and explain how penguins are able to adapt to their surroundings. This makes learning much more interesting than just plain reading and writing. As English Language Learners, art provides these students with another tool to help them better understand the rigorous content that is presented on a daily basis. In addition, students with disabilities will be able to concentrate and focus on learning and completing assignments if art is integrated into each lesson. Each year, the curriculum has become more rigorous and expectations to achieve are higher than ever. As teachers, we need to find different ways to help students learn and become successful students. Integrating art throughout the day will give the students a better opportunity to become well-rounded learners.
