Students LOVE to use their hands and flex their creative "muscles." Students need time to explore, create, build, and play. They need unstructured inquiry, imaginative play, and an opportunity to develop social competency. Brain bins are one way that I am responding to these important needs within my classroom. Often in classrooms, students enter the room each morning, expected to complete a skill worksheet. Not here! Instead of coming to their seats to complete a skill worksheet, my students will select from a rotation of brain bins. The brain bins will include a variety of manipulatives for hands-on use. I am asking for items such as Snap Bots, Toys Squigz, GeoStix and Engineering Manipulatives. The open-ended creativity fostered by these Brain Bin materials at the start of the day allows students to focus, get "'wiggles" out, and sets a positive tone for their day. Brain bins set up my students for better academic success throughout the day.
