My students come from a high poverty area in California. They rarely get the opportunity to play outside because of the high crime rate. They comment on how they attend school to make a better life for themselves and their families. They all want to go to college, yet for my students, the goal is difficult. My classroom is made up of students who are struggling in reading and writing. The inability to read and write has caused my students to lack the confidence they need to succeed outside of school. With the implementation of an intervention program, they are slowly gaining the confidence they need to become healthy citizens. Motivation is not an issue with my students. They participate in class discussions and eagerly await the time they get to read. However, when the time comes for them to analyze books they have read, they are confused, embarrassed and frustrated. When we read, it does not become meaningful to them.
