My students would benefit immensely if they had a listening center in the classroom. The majority of my first graders read below grade level. Listening to books gives them a model on how to read fluently. The words they would be listening to would allow them to mimic what a good reader sounds like. Another advantage to having a listening center is that it would give the students individual practice to skills we are working on. Decoding new words and learning unfamiliar vocabulary would help my students become better readers. My class, on the whole, enjoys reading and the listening center would greatly support them moving to the next level.
