We are planning a collaborative experience with the 11th and 7th graders at our school. The 11th graders will be reading "Just Mercy" in English class and "The Hate U Give" during their independent reading time. In addition to applying Bryan Stevenson's experiences to the fictional novel, they are going to create activities that they can facilitate with our 7th graders. When the movie comes out, we're all going to go see it together before going back to our high school for an afternoon of thoughtful discussions, activities, and collaboration. We're so excited to be able to connect our two buildings together to help our students talk about the important issues that the book brings up--racial bias, police brutality, code-switching, family, and finding your voice. This is an incredibly important book and movie, and we would love to have the opportunity to get our students together to dig in and start a revolution. These books are the first part of our plan.
