My students live in East Los Angeles. They are curious and and intellectual, but some are extremely resistant to reading. Many of them are English learners who go home to primarily Spanish-speaking homes. This means they need as much exposure to English as possible. Although my students write powerful essays, complete complex creative projects, and engage in advanced discussion, their lack of academic vocabulary makes it hard for them to show their knowledge on standardized tests. Many are the first generation in their families to graduate from high school and most are the first to attend college. The majority of their parents did not finish high school, and becoming strong independent readers is essential college preparation.
