My fourth graders are students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities that attend a separate public special needs school in an urban, inner-city school district. Sadly, many of my students have been bounced from one unsuccessful school environment to another, waiting to find the setting that can best fit their needs. Although my students have struggled in a general education environment, most my students are academically capable and excel in a small classroom environment focused on hands-on learning. Until attending our program, many of my students felt that they would never learn to read or write, let alone master advanced math concepts like algebra, fractions or elapsed time! Daily, my students prove that every child can become a successful learner, regardless of disability, emotional challenges, or economic status.
