Our school serves a high poverty, high ELL population where students love to think, explore and discover. We serve a school where over 90% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. They are naturally curious and we aim to expand on the best they can bring us by giving them authentic opportunities to grow as readers. Many students are not yet in the habit of reading for pleasure or gathering information about the world that is important to them. Often reading is viewed as a chore, something to be done because others ask it of them. We want to open their eyes to the wonders of reading and spark their curiosity about the world around them through building background knowledge and making reading accessible, social and engaging.
