Having a wide variety of books on different topics and of varying levels allows students to learn and grow as readers. It also helps them build their background knowledge on a variety of topics. Students need real books to practice their skills both at home and at school. Informational books will help them achieve their goals as readers. They will be able to self select book on topics of interest to them. Having a vast amount of choice in a classroom library helps all students. The standards addressed are the Reading Informational Standards. Students can ask and answer questions about their text, find the main idea and supporting details, compare and contrast books on the same topic, learn about different text structures authors use in books, and read a variety of grade level appropriate text.
