My students use ArcGIS Online to learn about using maps and data as teams, to solve problems and find answers to questions. If students can understand the connections between place and problem, they can engineer solutions to water contamination, wildfire containment, and algal blooms, to name a few examples. By collecting geographic information in the field in real time, my students can be located on the ground, doing cutting edge research and analysis. To do this, they need to have a mechanism with which to upload accurate field data into the ArcGIS Online database. The Garmin GPS units will be that interface. With the relevant data collected and securely stored, students can devise apps like citizen disaster reporting programs, communicate with the public by means of story maps and map journals, and analyze physical features and engineering projects. GIS technologies have the potential for many future career opportunities for students, and also develops their abilities to think about issues facing society.
